iPad Alternative - The Archos 9 PC Tablet

With the whole world salivating over the new Apple iPad, it is natural for one to ask if it is the only freestanding tablet PC device around. The truth is, standalone tablet PCs has been in the market for quite sometime now but they just have not managed to be as functional as the new iPad. Furthermore the iPad hype is currently riding on the astronomical success of the iPhone.

Like with many Apple products, the iPad has sparked frenzy among other PC giants in producing their own version of standalone tablet PCs. At the time of writing, one of the most impressive models would have to be the Archos 9 PC Tablet.

First of all, it runs on the new Windows 7 OS. This is enough of a reason for many to buy this device as it will be to run a variety of Windows applications such as Office applications and Live TM messenger. It comes with a 1.3MP web-cam and an 8.9-inch LED back-lit touch-screen.

Design wise, the Archos 9 PC Tablet is extremely small, measuring at 10.07 x 5.28 x 0.67 inches in dimensions and weighing in at just 29 ounces. It has a 1.2Ghz Intel Atom processor, 60GB for storage and 1GB of DDR2 RAM. Connectivity wise, this tablet has Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11b/g wi-fi. The battery on this model can last up to 5 hours on one charge.

To put it straight up, there is currently no other device that can match the touch-screen on Apple devices. With that said, the screen on the Archos 9 was decent enough and was quite fun to use. Then screen was also extremely crisp and bright, perfect for watching videos and movies. All in all, the Archos 9 does a pretty good job at carving itself a niche in the iPad hype. It may not be an 'iPad killer' but its great design and the familiarity of the Windows OS will be enough to garner the tablet its own legion of fans.
