Sudan Crisis

Mar 2008 Five years into one of the world's biggest humanitarian crisis, the situation in Darfur shows no signs of improving. This exclusive report - filmed inside Darfur - reveals the refugees' plight. "I'm sick, cold, hungry," laments one refugee. "How long will this go on?" For years, the Sudanese government and janjaweed militias have been attacking civilians, trying to dislodge a rebel movement. Now, the rebel groups have turned on each other and civilians in a bid for power. "There are quite possibly more than 20 different rebel factions", explains Alun McDonald from Oxfam. "It makes negotiating peace increasingly difficult". Government official, Al-Hadi Ahem Ali, is responsible for keeping the displaced alive. But NGOs feel hampered by government bureaucracy and the worsening security situation. "A colleague was killed the day before yesterday, something like 18 drivers are missing..." complains one aid worker. No one believes Al Hadi's assurances that; "Security is OK. There is no real problem". Everyday, yet more displaced families arrive at the camps, fleeing from janjaweed raids. "They killed 37 people", laments one man. For years, these people have been promised protection by the international community. As McDonald states, after years; "They're getting increasingly frustrated."
