Mesothelioma is a potent form of cancer that damages the lining of the lungs, lining of the abdominal cavity and/or lining around the heart due to abnormality in cell growth. It is most often caused directly or through secondary exposure to asbestos, which is inhaled by people working in places with asbestos via their clothes, skin or hair.
Unfortunately, treatment is costly and difficult, the life expectancy being no more than two years post-diagnosis.
In rare cases, mesothelioma is successfully removed through surgery if discovered in early stages, which in itself is rare as symptoms show long after the onset of the disease.
International Mesothelioma Alliances
That is not to say all hope is lost. Thanks to the international mesothelioma alliances which are waging war against asbestos, by promoting awareness and encouraging countries worldwide to ban it's use where patients, doctors, scientists and NGOs unite to stand against this menacing disease.
Patients and/or their family members can become members of these international alliances by enrolling with them.
Objectives of International Mesothelioma Alliances
The main objective of the international mesothelioma alliances is to offer curative treatment to the patients as well as provide relief to them - both physically as well as psychologically. They are usually non profit organizations.
They bring together a community of people: the patient, their families, the doctors, scientists, advocates, the society, science, the government. The purpose is to:
-obtain a broader view of the extent of this disease
-share research results and study findings
-review progress
-form an ally on a global scale
-ally between the federal government, science and the people
Previously, obtaining information on mesothelioma and claiming compensation was a cumbersome process. Advice involving economic reimbursement such as medical costs, lost employment income, lost future income, as well as non-economic damages are issues dealt by these alliances.
How International Mesothelioma Alliances help research
The international alliances provide infrastructure for clinical materials, animal models and pilot funding to enable scientists to carry forward their research. They build a database for patients with the aim of identifying geographical areas of outreach and asbestos exposure. They provide information on legal issues as well as on getting monetary compensation.
The research programs are usually funded by donors towards non-profit establishments, initiated by these alliances.
Regular symposiums are organized by the alliances to provide a forum for clinical research to share and translate latest research into improved treatment.
Some prominent alliances are:
" International Mesothelioma Program
" American Cancer Society
" National Cancer Institute
" National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health
" Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation
" American Lung Association
" Mesothelioma International
